Fourth of July is a time where families and friends get together to celebrate. In my Cape Verdean Culture, we celebrate our Independence Day on July 5th. This holiday can also be one of heavy eating and snacking. One of the snacks that we will bring to cookouts, are organic fresh fruit and salad. Organic blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are a great snack to have on hand, amidst all of the chips, cookies and cakes.
Although we’re not huge blackberry fans, our family loves them.
-Blackberries are an excellent source, loaded with Vitamin C and they are great for fiber. Minerals like copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, niacin, and folic acid, can also be found in this fruit.
-Raspberries are again an excellent source of vitamin C and also manganese. They have anti-cancer benefits of thay may extend beyond their basic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory aspects. Phytonutrients in raspberries may also be able to change the signals that are sent to potential or existing cancer cells. This in itself is why they are called one of the worlds healthiest foods.
-Blueberries are natures candy and also our favorite. We have these on hand in our home, all the time. They contain the unique, phenol-like antioxidants pterostilbene and resveratrol. Blueberries are a good source of vitamin K, vitamin C and manganese. Blueberries are also a good source of fiber and copper. They aid in brain power as well and can eliminate oxidative stress. They are a vital source for skincare and can aid in healing acne.
So these yummy snacks are a great dessert to bring to any function, ones that the whole family can enjoy while maintaining health!
